Home Around in the World --- Finances - 2009
Budget and Finances

In a nutshell, the trip of 21,000 miles through Canada and the US over three months, camping 30% of the time, the rest staying either in motels, friends' homes or other, cost just over $7,000... about $5.07/day over what I had projected before I started. Some expense categories were surprisingly close to my rough budget estimates. All actual costs are a mix of US and Canadian dollars. I didn't keep track of the exchange as it was pretty close to par the entire summer. Furthermore, the trip was originally estimated to be 18,000 miles, but in the end, was just over 21,000. So the actual costs reflect the longer trip.

Actual Budgeted Notes
Total Overall Cost
$7,218.25 $6,709.00 Average daily costs, however, taking into account the longer trip (95 days) was $5.07/day over the budgeted daily cost of $70.91/day. Longer trip = more days = more lodging, food, fuel, maintenance, etc.
Average Miles/Day
221.4 189.5 It turned out to be longer trip than planned and so I had to bump up the average mileage at the end. I had to be back in Kamloops by mid-October due to obligations and weather. The longest day was 610 miles, shortest was of course 0. Most of the days that were spent just "traveling" were about 400.
Average Fuel/Gallon $3.37 $4.00 Nice surprise
Total Fuel
$1,529.64 $1,600.00 Budgeted for a shorter trip, but still came in under budget even for the longer trip
Total Lodging - All types
$2,220.82 $2,538.00 Came in under budget even though I camped far less (33% of the time) than I had planned for. The big surprise was that motels were generally less than I had anticipated and I had not taken into account $0 nights while staying with friends/family
Total Food Costs
$1,842.20 $1,900.00 I hadn't planned on eating at restaurants so much... was just guided by the budget. If I had blown the daily budget by lunch, I just didn't eat dinner and so that's why this item is so close.
Total Other Daily Costs
$267.04 $95.00 Things like gifts made up the bulk here
Total Maintenance
$516.00 $576.00 This included not only a few items such as new instrument cluster circuit board, but also acquisition of parts I didn't really use... like a new turn signal relay. Includes oil changes. Also includes pro-rated cost of tires, etc.

I'll post next year's budget when I get it worked up... but need to track down some pivotal items... like just how long a trip it will be. 10,000? 20,000 miles?
