Budapest, Hungary - June 25, 2012

Sorry about the long drought... but actually we had few internet connections and just found ourselves to be very busy. I'm back in Budapest now... Diane caught her flight back home early this morning. All very sad as it marked the end of an incredibly wonderful time :( Truly remarkable...

from the box seats and our evening at the Budapest Opera House...
to our discovery of a German road map depicting the best and most scenic motorcycle backroads in southern Austria, Slovenia and northern Italy, and which formed the basis of our trip...
to our meeting of Herr Huber in the little town of Eisenwald, Austria, who took us under his wing, found us a place to stay, treated us to a couple of beers and who regaled us with his stories of motorcycling through Kashmir and Ladakh in India, visiting all the little towns and villages Diane and I had visited 30 years ago...
to our evening stroll and boat ride the length of Lake Bohinj in Slovenia...
to our spectacular ride along the historic Soca Valley, former front between Italy and Austria-Hungary during World War One...
to the fantastic views up and over Soca Pass with its 50 numbered hairpin switchbacks...
to Alveira, who ran a B&B in Tolmezzo, Italy and who treated us by dressing in her hand made and embroidered native dress from that region of Italy...
to sun-drenched Pura Pass, where we found a refugio at the top, wandered through the profusion of wildflowers and spent the night...
to our drive through the scariest cave-like tunnels on the road to Sauris, likely the cutest city in Italy...
to our visit of the small village of Longiaru in the Italian Dolomites...
to our retreat south from Winklern, Austria in the rain...
to our stroll around Lake Bled in Slovenia, our tasting of the creme cakes, our walk along the gorge with its infinitely clear water and hundreds of trout, and of watching the sunset over Slovenia's highest mountain from the balcony of our guesthouse...
to warming our hands on a hot tea cup, while sitting in a cafe watching the rain just pour on our way back to Budapest...
and to our evening stroll under clearing skies and the lights of Budapest...

It was a wonderful, wonderful trip. And except perhaps for sharing the birth of our kids, maybe the best time we have ever spent together. Maybe even better, in that neither one of us wound up needing an epidural!

Anyway, we had nearly perfect weather... always good when and where it counted.

But now it's time to move on. I'm off to Slovakia today, then to Krakow, Poland tomorrow where I may spend a day or two. It sounds like a beautiful place. After that, I think it will just be a ride to Tallinn, perhaps reaching there around the 1st as originally planned. I'll have to keep Bill and Tiiu informed somehow. I'll call as I get close to Estonia.

So clear skies today. Good. I can dry out after yesterday's downpour.
